The Do’s and Don’ts while owning a Domain name

Do's and Don'ts

With a number of hosting companies and deceiving packages out there, you could end up subscribing the wrong plan and eventually causing serious harm to the reputation of your business. Before making a hurried decision, consider these rules of thumb to ensure you select the right domain names and secure them.

Do: Research your domain registrar/hosting companies

It is necessary to gather all the necessary information about the domain registrar including their price list. You should be able to compare the prices and features with others and filter out the best from the lot. Reviews and recommendations for the domain registers and hosting companies are easily available online, and a quick study of them will help you arrive at a wise decision.

Do: Check the availability of the domain name

Before approaching a hosting company you may want to check the availability of your preferred domain names. There are several domain search tools out there and you can easily perform the search. You can also have this done from the website/domain search tool of your hosting company.

Do: Use keywords or location in your domain name.

If your business/website is intended for a specific geographic region, put the location into the name of your domain. Another thing to consider is to add the most important keyword that defines your industry in the domain name.

Do: Enter your name as the owner of the domain name.

If the business is yours, the website and the domain name should also be yours too. Giving anyone else on the team or your partner the ownership is risky as they might leave your company along with the administrative contact for the domain name. Getting back the ownership of your domain could be an expensive affair. So, check and recheck if it has been registered under your name.

Don’t: Buy a domain without checking it

If you find your available domain name, check if it could cause any legal conflicts.  A domain name too similar to another company’s trademark may get you in trouble. Save yourself money and effort by doing some initial research and running a domain name background check.

Do: Keep your Contact Information up to date

Registrar uses your given contact details to notify you about a number of important things, and therefore your contact information, especially your email address should be kept up to date. Your registrar should have the current contact information and if you change your email address the same should be communicated with the registrar.

Don’t: Forget to set up auto-renew

It is important to know the renewal date for the domain name and to renew it in a timely manner. It is advisable to purchase a registration for five or 10 years or set up an annual auto-renew payment. If you forget to renew the domain name, then you will lose the website and it may disrupt your business. Also, make sure the credit card on file doesn’t expire.

There are companies to watch for dropped domain names, and as soon as the notice one they go for it. Regaining the access from them can cost you a lot of money. When you are with a reliable company, you get notifications and expert advice to secure your domain names.

Don’t: Go for extensions other than .com.

Purchasing extensions is not necessary always. The offers to purchase other versions may be overwhelming but don’t waste money on it, unless it is .com or for patenting purpose or protecting a trademark. For small businesses, buying additional extensions doesn’t really matter.
